The Saltburn Cliff Tramway is the oldest water balanced funicular still in operation in Great Britain. The impressive and attractive tramway links the Victorian town of Saltburn with the only remaining pleasure pier on the whole North East coast.
It was designed and installed by George Croydon Marks in 1884 to replace a vertical hoist that had been declared unsafe. In 1924 an electrically operated water pump was installed. The installation has been lovingly refurbished, restoring the Tramway to its former Victorian glory. Both carriages are fully accessible and dog friendly, and a ride on the Tramway makes a great way to get to or from the sandy beach with all its seaside delights.
While you’re in the upper town itself, why not a pay a visit to one of the quirky shops such as Saltburn Vintage Rooms or the Book Corner? Grab a bite to eat at The Sitting Room or a homemade cake at Signals. Down on the seaside, head to Camfields for a caffeine fix or award-winning fish and chips at The Seaview Restaurant.
