Dominating the Hartlepool Headland, St Hilda’s Church has been described as a ‘glory of early English architecture’. An on-site visitor centre with modern interactive displays charts the Grade I-listed building’s history as well as that of the founding Abbess.
If you fancy stretching your legs, The Way of St Hild route celebrates the importance of St Hild – Abbess of both Hartlepool and Whitby in Saxon times – to the region and recognises the contribution she made to the Christian heritage of the North East and beyond. Unlike many pilgrimage trails, the 48-mile Way of St Hild route does not rely solely on maps and booklets as the primary source of assistance for walkers, instead it features 12 augmented reality waypoints. At each waypoint you can access stories and information on the key parts of the route – from the beginning of the route at St Hilda’s Church on the Headland to the Tees Transporter Bridge, Huntcliff Roman Signal Station and the final point at Whitby Abbey.
