The villages of Maltby, Stainton and Coulby Newham nestle to the south of Middlesbrough, where you’ll find pockets of open countryside and a couple of good pubs.
Our top tip for the area is Chadwicks Inn Maltby, a traditional pub with an award-winning restaurant, it’s a regular in the Michelin Guide. Set in a 19th Century public house with bags of original features, the restaurant serves a modern, seasonal menu which incorporates fine dining and gastropub favourites.
While you’re in the area, pay a visit to Hemlington Lake near Coulby Newham. A tree-filled haven for waterfowl, which includes a wooded island providing homes for nesting birds, the 39 acres of open parkland make it a good spot for a wander, and you can fish here too.
